Located strategically at the geographic centre of Northwest BC, Terrace is the hub for highway, rail and air transportation routes. The Northwest Regional Terrace-Kitimat Airport is part of an important regional air system servicing commercial and charter flight demand throughout British Columbia. omb was retained in the spring of 2014 to develop phase one of the terminal expansion plan. The logic of the design is driven by the seamless flow of passengers from check-in to plane, and upon arrival from the plane to bag pick-up, car rental and curbside pick-up. Highlighting the destinations within this experience are roof lanterns introducing light from above. Glazing to the south offers expansive views of the Kitimat Ranges of the Coast Mountains. Taking advantage of this solar exposure also offsets heating demand within the facility and floods the common public areas with natural light. An extensive wood ceiling, constructed of local hemlock unites the common areas and creates consistency between the new addition and the existing terminal building.
