The Fraser Mills Presentation Centre, located within the new Fraser Mills Community development in Coquitlam BC will be constructed as a temporary building with a lifespan of approximately 20-25 years, during which the new building will serve both as a presentation centre (PC) and a community destination. The PC will be one of the first new buildings in the emerging neighbourhood and seeks to establish itself as a an important landmark and symbol of the future community. Given the temporary nature of the structure, the project seeks to consciously select materials and building methods appropriate site, historic legacy as well as its future demolition. Materials of high quality and environmental sensitivity are to be selected for both the interior and exterior of the project. To celebrate the important history of the Fraser River Sawmills, one of North America’s largest lumber mills, the PC will appropriate the use of engineered Mass Timber technologies for its structure and cladding. Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) waffle slab roof structure supported by glulam timber columns which will maximize clear span structure and enable a number of configurations for the build-out of the display suites over time. The proposed cladding is composed of vertically spaced stained cedar slats served by interior and exterior lighting treatment to give the illusion of a glowing lantern on the riverside.
